He says that after his detailed analysis of this website it is not "hosted by word press" whatever that means. He also said this blog is on its own server and that there is nobody to complain to about it. He tried to explain but I couldnt understand the geeky stuff.

I say "know" as in I have met a few of them a couple of times or have had cause to have dealings with them. The others are mysteries, though their IP addresses resolve to Melbourne so they aren't 4chan. They are political types.

As for the climate change issue and Hal's resignation, I do see his point. He is an idealist (for better or worse) and my understanding of his view is that he sees the perversion of the pursuit of truth and knowledge for it's own sake as being a bad thing – that the pursuit of truth requires funding and chasing that funding has therefore become the goal.

Yes, scientists, just like ISVs – have to eat. We have to be paid for our work else we cannot afford to eat, live, be clothed and or otherwise rewarded for our work. How differently would our work be if we offered it all for free and how much more creative development and/or pushing the boundaries could be accomplished if we didn't have to factor in sales, marketing and allowing the market forces to guide our products and offerings? It's the same for scientists.
And I wouldn't say that it is the same scientists that are skewing their articles but more of a political bias towards using the articles inappropriately in government. And that is a whole other issue.
And as for scientific evidence, data and consensus – well we have the Theory of Evolution, the Theory of Gravity, the Germ Theory of Disease – all unproven but without a doubt confirmed. We have similarly stacks of evidence that strongly suggests climate change is occurring and an almost similarly sized stack of evidence that suggests that the same gasses produced by our civilisations are also the same gases that contribute to the warming effect. How much? Well, we have models for that .
Everyone should be able to debate and question, but it needs to be done in an involved and knowledgeable way and not at all like some of the guest comments on your blog!

Yes, mate. Scientists have to eat. My own take on Hal, and until now this has been unstated by me, is that he is also concerned with the modification of data to support a forgone view. We have seen this occuring. NOAA, East Anglia, they leave a lot to be desired. I must dig out the East Anglia stuff for you and send it across.
Towards the future? We need, IMHO, to decouple this science from politics. The nasty "denier" rhetoric needs to go. The intollerance for questioning has no place in scientific debate. That part truly is the domain of religion. I have nothing against religion either, just so long as it's not compulsory.

If you're talking about the ClimateGate emails, the comments that I've seen published in the various news outlets are rather taken out of context.
However yes we need to get back to "proponents" and "skeptics" and get some healthy scientific debate back on television and into popular media. Unfortunately most people see argument as aggressive shouting instead of intelligent careful debate and science as dangerous.
As for religion, this is largely my issue with constantly debating scientific theories (Climate Change not withstanding!). Yes, we need much more (INFORMED!!!!) debate about climate change but we don't need "every possible" idea taught in schools. After all, the concept of man made climate change is either correct or not and in the same way as astronomy/astrology, chemistry/alchemy, evolution/special creation/intelligent design, we would do well to question everything – but after a point it does get tedious to keep asking, "Do we really orbit the sun"?

It's true some comments from E. Anglia were taken out of context. It's also true that some were pretty clear in their context. It's a mixed bag.
I suspect the green movement in the UK is less advanced politically than it is here. Don't get me wrong, there are some decent folks amongst their membership. But there is a loud, ugly side, there to. I've seen them carry on at public debates, stamping their feet to drown out speakers, shouting and chanting "LIAR!!" to drown out speakers.

I neither believe nor disbelieve. Science is about the critical analysis of fact, based on accumulated evidence. Evidence can frequently be produced for and against a hypothesis. This is why modern science avoids words like "law" and uses instead "theory". I do not think "climate change" is a theory. Climate change is an ongoing natural process. I don't know anybody who denies it's reality, and doubt I'll meet one.
One I do see however is people who question evidence of degrees of climate warming and it's cause. That does not mean they "believe" or not "believe". "Belief" is based on an act of faith and is diametrically opposed to scientific method.
For the unteenth time, to post, read, discuss or even analyze data that disagrees with "consensus" promotes healthy science. So doing need not disprove the theory of "global warming." But it does help us identify bad statistical collation of data, faulty conclusions, innacurate measurement and where it is found – fraud.
I know of no human endeavor that has ever been completely free of such things by at least a few individuals. Vested interests are not the domain of only those who would disagree with that which others hold as given.

Passing "out in embarrassment " may well be a Green thing, I don't know as I've always prided myself on not spending to much time on them.

I never stated stimulus was “a travesty that will bite our backsides for generations.” I did say I felt it would not achieve the desired outcome and that what was needed was tighter control on how stockmarkets operated, debt was handled and packaged and that the money was better spent on infrastructure than plasma TV's imported from ROC.
It is true that I have posted articles on the 2009 bushfires, it is also true that I have squarely labelled blame for *some apsects* on populist environmental policies. I do not deny that and stand by it. That eminent bushfire scientists agree with me is telling. It is also telling that you folks, who insist on us all accepting all the climate scientists tell us is gospel, that you do not accept the scientific literature on forest management by scientists who study bushfires fulltime.

Well let me add to the bushfire comments. I live in a forest. Forests get bushfires. Those of us who live here understand and try to manage the risks.
As a result of the 'Green' influence the Queensland Government has wound down proper fire risk management to the extent that future fires will be devastating. Not just to humans and housing, but to wildlife. We now see fuel load never even contemplated in the past. A perfect example of populism at its worst.

No-one here has, to my recollection, denied that climate change is an issue. But the science is not 'in', there is plenty of debate going on between capable and well respected scientists. There are different opinions on how best to deal with the many issues that arise from climate change, and that debate is a healthy one.

In fact they control access to the data of most of the global weather station measurements as well as the USA and most non military weather satellites world wide. Hello! I first read this letter of resignation on another website in October out of interest. I searched for it tonight to share with someone else. Interestingly, it has become harder to find. Looking through your huge collection of…ahem…comments, I can see why. The resignation letter is probably being deleted so webmasters and blog owners don't have to waste their time dealing with hate mail.
Unbelievable. I have to shake my head after scrolling through all the insults people carelessly toss around. Is this what our world has become? Why should we save the planet when it's just going to be full of hateful people? Why claim we all want "World Peace" when no one is willing to actually CREATE it? How difficult could it possibly be for some of these readers to back up their opinion with some real fact and engage in a real debate about an issue instead of immediately lashing out at a total stranger? To many of these people I am a stranger, as you say, but some commenting do in fact know me due to my involvement in politics – in a different party to the one they are members of. It has been my experience with the modern environmental movement that no dissention is tolerated, no question may be asked.

The tax is bothering me immensely. It has the potential to raise food prices globally. This would be an utter disaster. We are already seeing riots around the world that have food, in varying degrees, at the root of the issue. The potential is there for this to get worse. Tax on carbon fuels, fuel shortages (Middle East problems) – one doesn't have to be an economist to see how that can pan out.

Pretty much voiced my own feelings. It is like the calm before the storm. In fact it's a lot like the period just prior to Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria's assasination. Scientists who have argued for proper debate on this, an issue hijacked by a very few powerful men as an excuse to drive the middle classes (the job creators) into a mire of tax and debt, have been threatened with their lives and in many cases have simply disappeared or died mysteriously.
Are you saying we cannot discuss the problems we face and, in the regular way of debate-legislate, to come up with answers that are sustainable not only to our beautiful rock but also to the benefit of its inhabitants, of whatever species?

It's nice to see that the Australian Academy of Science is helping you to wade through the (steaming) swamp of climate change evidence, but it is worth pointing out that some science is more, well, scientific than others.
The scientific method involves the following steps: observation of a natural phenomenon, development of an hypothesis to explain the phenomenon, and finally the design and execution of an experiment to test the hypothesis. Unfortunately, this last crucial step is missing in a number of scientific disciplines because it is either impossible or impractical.
These disciplines include geology, palaeontology, cosmology, economics, history and of course climatology. We only have one universe, one earth and only one global economy to observe and this makes proper experimentation impossible. Scientists in these disciplines are forced to resort to models of the real world to test their hypotheses. All models of complex systems like the economy or climate, no matter how sophisticated are only flawed imitations of reality — we only construct the model because we don't fully understand the system, so it follows that the model will be imperfect.
This lack of true experimental testing of hypotheses is the crippling flaw of these semi-sciences. It is interesting that many of the protagonists in the science change debate come from similar semi-scientific disciplines (e.g. Plimer — geology, Calderwood — economics). Not many physicists are weighing into the debate because they don't see any hard evidence to talk about.
Apart from the use of models, the other concept that keeps cropping up in the climate change debate is scientific consensus. Apparently, if all the scientists agree on something it must be true, whether the evidence is there or not. Well, in my field of medicine we have developed a hierarchy of evidence to guide us in deciding which treatments work and which don't.
Multiple randomised trials (a form of experiment) constitute the highest level. And down near the bottom? That's right, consensus of expert opinion. Just above the opinion of your taxi driver or that talkative old bloke down the street…

Caring for the planet is a story of everyone. The planet is our parent. When we was young, our Mom and Dad cared for us. When we growed up, we leaved them, and only come to them when we need something or when we are in trouble.
